Notes on Lev Manovich writings, etc.

Some hand written notes on Lev Manovich's writing on hybrid media, and notes on other aspects of convergent media.

Feedback on proposal Poster

Most of the feedback wanted us to cement what aspects of power/control etc that we wanted to explore.

--28/1/13 After today's workshop where we pitched our ideas

We have decided that the theme of our experimental film(s) will be the corruption, power and influence that the media has.
We will look at news, newspapers, magazines and advertising.

To involve the public in our work, we are going to design a questionnaire that will give us some feedback and responses to how people see the truth in the media, or the power of advertising or the influence of magazines, for example.

The rest of the feedback wanted us to explain how it was going to be presented better.

We are going to have live action footage that merges into a rotoscoping type of animation, most probably using photographs cut out and scanned or photocopied.

Overview

Power and Control is the main theme of this project.

The form?
A video, with animation, found footage and possibly some interaction for the viewer; this would probably require the viewer to make a choice for the character, and the choice would link to one of 3 (or more) short, experiemental videos.

These/this video would explore the theme of power and control, looking closely at choice (to link to the interactive form) and influence (which ties our content, with the form of hybrid media).

HYBRID MEDIA.

Lev Manovich defines hybrid media as media that takes influence and inspiration from different forms of media and combines them to make a new, hybrid form.

So for our project, we are taking video, animation, rotoscoping and maybe types of interactive media and combining all these influences to make a hybrid project, about power, control and influence.

Working with Wlodzimierz (http://powerandcontrolwmb.blogspot.co.uk/) we brainstormed all the types of animation and films that we liked and why we liked them.
We really like rotoscoping but want to find a new way of creating a similar effect.

Rotoscoping is the process of drawing over film frames from live action footage and animating them, or  as a process of taking live action footage, and transferring it into different footage or animation.

Some examples:
A Scanner Darkly:

The opening credits of Juno:

To explore the themes we are going to use found footage, most likely of politician's speeches etc, and alter them by changing the sound, words, and with animation.
